In 1986 while in his surgical training at the University of California at San Diego, Dr. Neal began studying sculpture with art professor Newton Harrison. Though in the beginning it was to make him a better surgeon through refining his sense of three-dimensional aesthetics, it nurtured his skill and interest in sculpture which has matured into a second career. His experience as an instructor in surgical anatomy has facilitated rapid growth of sculpting skills necessary to create beautiful and complex figures which he now produces. It was during the San Diego era that Dr. Neal recognized the deja-vous experience from his art background as he trained in facial plastic surgical procedures. Noting the similarities between the two worlds, Dr. Neal began organizing a core of lectures for surgeons which later became the basis for his art seminars which he teaches today to facial plastic surgeons from around the world. Through the study of art, he believes, beginner facial plastic surgeons can achieve superior results faster and veteran surgeons can attain new heights. Dr. Neal is an emerging artist in the world of sculpture but is nationally recognized in his specialty for his contribution to the art and aesthetics of facial plastic surgery. |
