Dr. Neal obtained a bachelor of arts from BYU in 1976 in Asian Studies, graduating magna cum laude, and with High Honors and University Scholar designations. Dr. Neal received a 4-year scholarship to the University of Texas Health Health Science Center at San Antonio where he obtained his medical degree in 1982. Graduating in the top 3% of his class, he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Post-doctoral surgical training was obtained at the University of California at San Diego where he did a one-year internship in general surgery and subsequent 4-year residency in Head and Neck Surgery, graduating in 1987. Dr. Neal moved with his family to eastern Oregon where he entered private practice in Pendleton, and received a clinical appointment the same year at the Oregon Health Science University. He is board-certified in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery since 1987, and became a fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1991. He became a fellow of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1992 and a member of the Founder's Club of that organization in 1997. He currently is a Clinical Assistant Professor at OHSU, and an instructor for the AOA/HNS and the Facial Plastic Academy where he is nationally recognized for his contributions to the aesthetics of facial plastic surgery. He is also on the faculty of the annual Art of Rhinoplasty course held in San Francisco.
